Jay Leno's 1963 3.8 Jaguar E-Type
Jay Leno's All Original 1963 3.8 Jaguar E-Type Coupe
My hat is off to Jay Leno for having got his hands on an all original 1963 3.8 Jaguar E-Type Fixed Head Coupe. Amazingly, the car only had one owner who must have been meticulous to have kept a car in such great condition for 50 years.
I also congratulate Jay on appreciating the originality of the car. There are so few examples of cars like this that have not been restored that it's rare to be able to have the experience of the look and feel of the car as it was fifty years ago. This 1963 3.8 Jaguar E-Type is as much a time machine as it is timeless. There are plenty of other cars out there that are good candidates for restorations or updates, but this is not one of them.
This Jaguar had been sitting for two years before Jay got it. The bit of corrosion he showed when he got it looked to be cosmetic. All they had to do was buff it out and fix a few odds and ends to end up with such a beautiful original E-Type.
Per the rear oil seal leak on the engine, an old timer once told me they would wax a string and wind it on the shaft against the seal to fix those types of leaks. Why pull the engine right? Maybe if Jay wanted to keep it as a period piece, he could try the same technique. Let me know if it really works. That being said, they make rear oil seals for Jaguars now that are up to modern standards.
I rebuilt my Jag trying to keep it all original rebuilding all the original components myself. The only thing I could't fix was the clock, so I got a kick about how he was proud that even the clock still worked on this E-Type.
Although he didn't mention it, I noticed the headliner in the car was in great condition. All in all, the woman that owned it must have taken great pride and care in her 1963 Jaguar E-Type. Congratulations Jay Leno.
